AEC ‘Etar’ is the only ethnographic museum on the Balkan Peninsula which is located in the open air. It was established in 1964 by the Gabrovian Lazar Donkov. Here one can enjoy 50 sites of interest such as water installations and houses with craftsmen's workshops attached, as well as sites of public significance. The complex is located 8 km. south of Gabrovo and is a replica of the main street of the old town of Gabrovo with running workshops where the mountain water crafts are being preserved.

Designed to illustrate the typical crafts, lifestyle and architecture of the past, this functioning open-air museum offers attractions, souvenirs and national culinary specialties. Sites of public significance, authentic fountains, clock tower and two stone bridges are also exhibited on the territory of the complex. A church has been built there since December 1998, along with a monastery school called ‘Holy Epiphany’. International Fair of Folk Crafts is held annually in September.
